The legendary Michael Jackson had an enormous influence on pop music and pop culture in the 1980s when he emerged as a solo artist and music superstar with the best selling album of all time, Thriller, which spawned numerous hit singles including Billie Jean, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin, The Girl Is Mine, Beat It, as well as the title track and its revolutionary music video directed by John Landis and featuring the voice of horror movie legend Vincent Price was revolutionary. To this day, the Zombie Thriller dance from the video is performed around the world as many strive to break the Guinness World Record for including the most participants in the dance.

The Material Girl had one iconic look after another as she first made her mark in the 1980s, bursting onto the pop music scene with three hit singles -- "Holiday", "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" -- from her self-titled debut album. She also made a memorable appearance as the title character in Susan Seidelman's 1985 movie Desperately Seeking Susan wearing what had become her signature look along with a unique jacket with a pyramid on the back. Through her music videos she had already begun influencing fashion with her signature clothing and jewelry; lace tops, mini-skirts worn over capri pants, camisole lace tops, fishnet stockings, multiple bracelets and the Catholic crucifix worn as a necklace. Bleached blond hair with dark roots exposed, was also part of the signature look -- easily duplicated with costume wigs. When we think 80s pop star costume we are generally thinking of Madonna.

In fact, you may find the fancy dress of the era easily lends itself to creative possibilities. You may wish to mashup an iconic punk rock 80s costume with an unexpected mask, Spiderman or Iron Man perhaps?
